Engines and Transmissions

There are currently six different engine choices for the 2020 Ford F150. Each has its own unique strengths and all are applicable in different situations. Whether you're looking at towing or hauling; fuel economy, or are just in the market for raw power; there's a variant for you.

Listed below is more specific information on each engine available.

3.3L Ti-VCT V6

The 3.3L is the affordable base engine for generic applications. Available on both the XL, and XLT; this engine uses twin independent variable cam timing to optimize power output at every point across the performance band. TI-VCT engines have the ability to control the timing of the intake and exhaust camshafts independently of eachother for optimal ouput under all conditions. The Ford dual direct and port fuel injection system in this engine positions two separate injectors in each cylinder; one in the intake port, and one located directly within the cylinder itself. This is abbreviated as PFDI and helps to optimize fuel economy, emissions, power, and eficiency.

Alongside the advanced operational technology, is a 6 speed automatic transmission with three selectable drive modes; Normal, Tow-Haul, and Sport. Each one helps provides proper tuning for each specific application. See Below for more specific information on fuel ecomony, power, towing capability, and payload.

2.7L EcoBoost ® V6

The 2.7L delivers impressive power in an engine with a small displacement. This is accomplished though the interplay of port-fuel and direct-injection; twin interval variable camshaft timing, and twin intercooled turbochargers. Port fuel and direct injection systems (PFDI) position two separate injectors in each cylinder; one in the intake port, and one within the cylinder; to get the most out of every drop of fuel. Twin interval variable camshaft timing (TI-VCT) can independantly control the intake and exhaust camshafts. This allows for improved fuel economy, reduced emmissions; and improved power and torque (especially at lower RPM's).

In addition to all of that, materials are chosen for light weights, and high strengths. For example; a compacted graphite iron block is chosen because it's stronger, lighter, and more acoustically sound than traditional iron, or aluminum cylinder blocks. Available on the XL, XLT, and Lariat models; this is a great all around engine for towing, city driving, long commutes, or commercial applications. The engine itself is married to a 10-speed transmission, co-developed by Ford and General Motors (GM). This transmission combines a wide ratio spread of 7.384, 6 clutches, and dual hydraulic pumps to optimize performace. In addition; three overdrive gears, and four selectable drive modes (Normal, Tow-Haul, Snow-Wet, Ecoselect, and Sport) ensures better fuel economy at high speeds, and optimal situational driveability. See Below for more specific information on fuel ecomony, power, towing capability, and payload.

3.5L Ecoboost ® V6

The 3.5L is the signature engine of the F150 lineup. This follows along with Ford's mandate of increased power through smaller displacement; in order to reduce emissions and increase efficiency. This engine carries the highest towing capacity of all the available half ton powertrains, and has characteristics that outperform most competitors V8 alternatives. As it was with the previous two alternatives; this engine utilizes port fuel and direct injection (PFDI), to help increase total performance. PFDI places one injector in the intake port, and one within the cylinder. This also assists with eliminating the need for premium 91 octane fuel, so the truck can run effectively on regular 87 octane fuel (despite having a relatively high compression ratio). In addition to PFDI, the 3.5L utilizes twin intercooled turbochargers in order to squeeze as much power as possible from an engine with a relatively small displacement. This also allows for a very steep torque curve, with the engine able to maintain 90% of it's torque from 1,700 - 5,000 RPM.

The transmission paired with the 3.5L Ecoboost ®, is the same 10-speed automatic mated to the 2.7L. This transmission was co-developed by Ford and General Motors (GM); and delivers enhanced acceleration at the low and mid ranges of the power band. Four selectable drive modes (Normal, Tow-Haul, Snow-Wet, Ecoselect, and Sport), 6 clutches, a wide 7.384 ratio spread, and dual hydraulic pumps deliver overall improved performance when compared to the 6-speed. There are also three overdrive gears for better performance, and fuel economy at high speeds. See Below for more specific information on fuel ecomony, power, towing capability, and payload.

5.0L TI-VCT V8

The 5.0L is Ford's powerful V8 option in the F150 engine lineup. As was with the 3.3L, and the 2.7L engines; the 5.0L utilizes TI-VCT technology (twin interval varialble camshaft timing) for improved power, torque, fuel economy, and reduced emissions. This is accomplished through independently controled intake and exhaust camshafts. In addition, the 5.0L shares PFDI (port fuel and direct injection) technology with all three previously described powertrains. This places two injectors per cylinder in the engine (one in the intake port, and another within the cylinder); so that every drop of fuel is maximized. This engine is an F150 specifc variant of Ford's Coyote V8, optimized for low end to mid range power and torque. In addition to providing robust power; this engine, when paired with a properly equipped F150, provides best in class payload.

The 5.0L engine is mated to the 10-speed automatic transmission. The joint venture between Ford and General Motors (GM) is built to deliver enhanced acceleration at the low and mid power band ranges. In addition to 6 clutches, a wide 7.84 ratio spread, and dual hydraulic pumps; there are four selectable drive modes (Normal, Tow-Haul, Snow-Wet, Ecoselect, and Sport). Performance and fuel economy are also drastically improved through the implementation of three overdrive gears. See below for more information on power, towing capability, fuel economy, and payload.

3.0L Turbo Diesel V6

The 3.0L Turbocharged V6, is Ford's Diesel option for the F150 Lineup. Availble on XL (Fleet only), XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum; this engine delivers lots of torque at a low RPM. In addition to immense power; impressive fuel ecomomy travels alongside. The engine itself is built with weight saving technologies such as a compacted graphite engine block, in order to maximize on this marriage of power and economy. There are also strength and durability improvements in the form of new bearings, lightweight aluminum pistons, and a new forged steel crankshaft. There are even piston oil jets which spray oil on the underside of each piston, for added durability and temperature control. Selective catalytic reduction (through diesel exhaust fluid (DEF)), diesel particulate filtration, and exhaust gas recirculation are all additional technologies implemented to help eliminate harmful emissions.

The 3.0L Turbo Diesel engine shares its transmission with the Ecoboost ® class. The 10-speed automatic was a conjoined effort between Ford and General Motors (GM) from which a technologically advanced transmission was brought into existance. This transmission has three overdrive gears for improved erformance and fuel economy, alongside four selectable drvie modes (Normal, Tow-Haul, Snow-Wet, and Sport. There is also a wide 7.84 ratio spread, 6 clutches, and dual hydraulic pumps to add to the robustness of the finished product, and deliver enhanced acceleration at the low and mid power band ranges.
